What is xDSL?
xDSL is a local loop
broadband networking solution for achieving simultaneous voice and
high speed data transmission over ordinary copper pair telephone
wire. Instead of a dial-up modem or a dedicated leased line, you use
your existing telephone line to connect to the Internet or other
networks at speeds ranging from hundred of kilobits per second to
multimegabit rates. The "x" in xDSL is used refer to DSL technology
in general. There is an extensive range of DSL-based services for
special applications.
What kind of
xDSL does ProSpeed offer?
Hotwire MVL from Paradyne, which, in
addition to high-speed data services, also gives us the ability to
deliver high quality voice service over the same wire.
Is xDSL a new
technology?
No. xDSL emerged in the early 1990s and
has been commercially available since 1996.
What can xDSL do for me?
If you rely on connections to the Internet
or a private Wide Area Network, xDSL gives you a constant high speed
connection. No more wondering about data rates while dialing up. No
more dialing, ever. You are always connected. Additionally, you can
access e-mail and the web at lightning fast speeds. If you are
considering leasing a dedicated line, xDSL can save you money.
What kind of
data rate is possible with Hotwire MVL?
MVL provides a variety of speeds both
upstream and downstream. ProSpeed is currently offering
bi-directional speeds of up to 768kbps.
If I go with
Hotwire MVL for my network access, can I communicate with other
people who don't have Hotwire MVL?
Yes. Hotwire MVL improves your connection
rate on your local telephone link and is not related to how others
are connected at their end, whether they have MVL, xDSL or other
connections.
Why not get a
T1?
T1 leased lines are the traditional
solution for constant data networking connections. Because T1 lines
require special wire conditioning and have a complicated setup
process, they are more expensive than xDSL. You also need more
expensive equipment to maintain a T1 leased line. xDSL, unlike a T1
line, works on your existing phone line.
Can multiple PCs at my site use the
line simultaneously?
Yes, depending on your specific
requirements. With MVL You can have up to 32 users at one site using
one line.
What kind of
equipment do I need?
All you need at your location to connect
to an MVL line is an MVL modem which ProSpeed provides. Connect it
to a 10BaseT NIC card in your PC, and you're ready to go for a
single user applicaiton. Add a simple hub and you can connect
multiple users.
What kind of
learning curve should I expect?
None. It's easier to use than a dial-up modem and there's nothing
for you to configure.
